The Modern IT Support Engineer: Why Technical Skills Alone Are No Longer Enough

When I first started working in IT, the metric for success was binary. If you could swap a motherboard, troubleshoot a local hardware failure, or navigate a command-line interface faster than the person sitting next to you, you were a top-tier engineer. Being technically strong was the beginning and end of the job description.

Today, that paradigm has shifted completely. After 15 years in enterprise IT — building support organizations from the ground up, supporting international customers, and deep-diving into the Microsoft stack — I've realized that the most valuable professionals aren't just those who have memorized documentation. They are the ones who can bridge the gap between technical expertise and human success.

Beyond "Fixing Computers"

The biggest misconception about IT support is that it is a reactive role — a digital firefighter waiting for a ticket to arrive. In a modern enterprise environment running Microsoft 365 and Azure, the reality is far more proactive.

Modern IT teams are no longer just "fixing things"; they are tasked with improving business productivity, increasing security, and enabling the adoption of AI. Every ticket that enters the queue represents a person whose work has stopped. The goal isn't simply to close that ticket; it's to enable that individual to do their job. When you shift your mindset from "solving a technical issue" to "enabling a person," your approach to engineering changes.

Technical Knowledge Is Only the Foundation

Of course, you still need the hard skills. Throughout my career, I've had to master:

  • Entra ID & Intune: Managing identities and endpoints in a hybrid world.
  • Windows Enterprise: Understanding the intricacies of the OS at scale.
  • Networking & Endpoint Troubleshooting: Solving the "it's the network" mystery.

But experience has taught me that these are just the tools. Sometimes the root cause of a failure isn't a misconfigured policy in Intune — it's a failure in communication or a broken business process. The best engineers understand that even the most elegant technical solution is useless if it isn't documented clearly or if the user doesn't understand why it's being implemented.

Real example: I've worked with users who were frustrated before the conversation even began. Sometimes they had deadlines or important meetings. Even when I couldn't immediately solve a problem, I always tried to make sure the customer knew someone was actively working toward a solution. Trust is built through communication, not only through technical expertise.

The AI-Augmented Engineer

There is a lot of noise about AI replacing IT support. Based on my experience implementing these technologies, I don't believe AI will replace the engineer — it will replace the repetitive, low-value work.

I regularly use AI to analyze logs faster, research specific Microsoft documentation, and validate troubleshooting paths. I use it to generate PowerShell examples or brainstorm automation opportunities. Instead of spending 30 minutes digging through multiple documentation pages, I can reach a solution in minutes.

Automation and Business Value

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is finding ways to eliminate repetitive tasks. Every recurring issue is a sign that a process is broken. Instead of solving the same problem 100 times, the modern IT Support Engineer solves it once through automation.

Modern IT is no longer an isolated silo. As a support engineer, you are now a central node in a network that includes security teams, cloud specialists, and business stakeholders.

Technology evolves at a breakneck pace — Microsoft 365 and Azure change almost weekly. Continuous learning is no longer an "extra" you do in your free time; it is a core part of the job. But no engineer succeeds alone. The ability to share knowledge, create reusable documentation, and collaborate across departments is what separates a senior engineer from a technician.
